Dogs of any size and breed can bite when frightened. Moreover, even the friendliest and calm dogs can bite to protect their territory or property.

Dog bites can cause bacterial infections, and when left untreated, they can lead to fatal infections. Therefore, it’s essential to know what to do when you encounter an aggressive dog. Below are a few things that experts suggest to remember when you face an aggressive dog.

1. Stay calm

Seeing an aggressive dog running toward you is scary, but you shouldn’t panic or scream. Running could provoke the dog into chasing you.

2. Try to distract the dog

If you are lucky to know the dog’s name, try to use it to maintain its attention and give it instructions; do not give many instructions because you will end up confusing the dog. Alternatively, if you have a treat with you, throw them at the dog.

Also, you can pick a stick and throw it far away; the dog might run after it and leave you alone. This will buy you enough time to escape.

3. Slowly back away

If you have distracted the dog and it has started losing interest in you, start backing away slowly. Do not turn your back on the dog. Also, always beware of the dog because dogs are quick and can catch up fast.

4. Protect yourself from an attack

If nothing stops the dog from attacking you, there are various things you can do to lower the risk that any injuries you suffer are severe. For example, you can cover your head, or place a barrier between you and the dog.

However, if you or a loved one has suffered a dog bite, seek medical attention as soon as possible. Also, consider seeking legal assistance to determine the most prudent course of action.
