Common causes of side impact collisions

On Behalf of | Jun 23, 2025 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Side impact collisions happen when one vehicle strikes the side of another. These are one of the most common accidents seen at intersections and can cause very severe injuries.

Side impact collisions often happen because a driver was negligent. Here are some key points to consider.

Running red lights and stop signs

One of the most common causes is a driver failing to stop at a red light or stop sign. When a vehicle runs a signal and crosses into the path of another car, it can strike the side of the other vehicle. These crashes often happen at full speed, giving the struck driver little or no time to react.

Failing to yield

Drivers who fail to yield the right of way can cause dangerous side impact collisions. This can happen when turning left across oncoming traffic or merging into traffic without checking blind spots. Inattention or impatience often leads to these incidents.

Distracted or impaired driving

Drivers who are texting, using a GPS or under the influence of drugs or alcohol are more likely to cause side impact crashes. These drivers may not notice traffic signals, road signs or other vehicles until it is too late to avoid a collision.

Potential injuries

Side impact collisions can cause serious harm. The side is less protected than the front or rear, especially for passengers. Common injuries include:

  • Head trauma from hitting windows or doors

  • Broken ribs or pelvis

  • Spinal injuries

  • Internal bleeding

  • Neck and shoulder injuries

In more severe cases, these injuries can lead to long-term complications or require emergency care. The injury risk increases when the crash happens at high speed or the vehicle has no side airbags. If you have been hurt on the roads, personal injury compensation may be available.
